Welcome to econogreenomics 101!

My original goal was to demonstrate that not buying any new gear for a year can be done in a way that is challenging, fun and allows me to still be (or try to be) sassy!

The main goal for the compact year was...

To live with high standards below my means, utilizing available resources and opportunities! Ya-Hoo!

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle - Restore

Although I am not "officially" doing the Compact any longer, I have adopted the traits of a "compactor." I am continuing to stay on my green path of less is more! It is always a work in progress, but the journey is a fun one, filled with lots of polyester, crinoline and coupons!

Bad Bad Blogger!!!

First... another apology. I am a bad blogger...!

How is my progress...? It is going well. It seems the more time I put into not consuming, the easier it is.

What has worked... Not looking at all parts of the Sunday paper. Seriously. I take out all of the ads of the places I am not going to shop for furniture, cosmetics, diamonds, cars, fleet items... etc. Not giving myself the chance to "want" shiny new items has been the best.

Second, and this seems like a no-brainer.. but not going shopping when I am not shopping new. This means, not going to the fall of America, not going on trips to other malls or tagging along my awesome Mamma Mia when she shops.

My set backs so far have been... buying a few new items during the move. Buying a few new items for the boys and their birthdays. I did buy a new mascara... even though I am sure I could have scrounged around for one. (It was so pretty and I love it) But - I did buy it with a coupon at a local drug store, so at least I stuck to be thrifty. :)

Upcoming conundrums... The new school year!

New school supplies??? I am torn. I think we are OK on two out of three backpacks needed. I am more concerned about paper, pencils, and new markers and glue..????

New school clothes?? Shoes - yes. I am OK with purchasing new shoe for the fellas. New clothes... uh, not so much. Is this wrong? A big help so far, is that the boys don't really seem to give a hoot about what they wear or where their clothes come from...

As for me, I have not given in, no new clothes or shoes for me. I have also gotten a few "new" things for the house, but it has all been broken in.

On another note, I have started a new position about a month ago. It pays less, but it so much more rewarding and flexible. Which will carry over into the school year. yeah. This will eliminate the need for before and after school care. Which I am sure many others can attest to, is a beast! I love getting to work each day and never knowing what the day will bring. It is awesome, I am working with talented folks and meeting incredible people - how lucky am I?

Thanks for checking in - hope you are having a fabulous summer!

Glad you're back! I keep checking for updates and hints on how to be econogreen.

I've heard that mascara needs to be replaced every three months because bacteria grows... so that purchase doesn't need to be included because it's for safety, not style :)

A Budget for Green - Every Little Bit Helps

I am fully aware that to reduce my carbon footprint to the fullest, I would need to buy and shop locally, eat organically, be a vegan or vegitarian, use public transit or drive a hybrid, use alternative energy sources, and among other things minimize my consumerism to the max.

I am not perfect. Far from it. But I do want to make a difference and do my part and be the best example I can to my children and others who will inherit this earth.

Given that I do not always have the means to always eat organically, as much as I would like to, and that my budget restricts me from being the eco-warrior I would like to be to the fullest extent, I do what I can. In my dream world, I live in a tiny, LEED certified house and drive a hybrid. (one day)

It is disheartening that for many of us our carbon footprints are larger because we do not have the means to afford a more sustainable lifestyle. Although I think it is getting easier to make larger green steps on smaller budgets.

With my limited means I try to make changes and continue what I have been doing to spend less, consume less, and raise my standard of living, while hopefully minimizing my impact on the planet.

Small budget... big goal. Econogreenomics.

Every little bit helps... and small changes can lead to big results. Less really can be more!
